William J. Sleddens, 82, of Columbus passed away Saturday, July 2, 2016 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
William "Willie" Sleddens was born December 18, 1933 in David City to John and Lena (Jacobs) Sleddens. He grew up in Butler county, Columbus, and Monroe. Willie worked as a farmhand until he enlisted in the United States Army in 1954; he was stationed in Germany where he served as an Artillery Survey Specialist until 1956 when he transferred to the Army Reserve and returned to Nebraska. Willie was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Good Conduct Medal, and Marksman- Sub Machine Gun.
He married Ursula "Suzie" Koester on December 31, 1958 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. Early on, he worked in the heating and air trade and then in construction until he was able to start his own construction business. After retirement he worked part-time in maintenance at Ag Park for 25 years, and enjoyed simulcasting horse races. He remained a member of St. Bonaventure, participated in Perpetual Adoration for 20 years, the Knights of Columbus and the Platte Center American Legion Post 283.
Willie enjoyed woodworking, gardening and flowers. He also enjoyed Husker and professional baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. He is remembered by family and friends as a strong man, skilled carpenter and a good neighbor.
