Warren Paul Melliger, 85, of Columbus, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 22, 2006.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Bonaventure Church. His ashes will be buried at the parish cemetery with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard. Lunch will be served at the Parish Center afterwards.
There will be a rosary on Tuesday, at 7 p.m. at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus.
Warren was born November 4, 1920 in Columbus, Nebraska to Albert and Pauline (Merz) Melliger, and grew up on a farm east of town. He received his early education at District #9 School and graduated from Kramer High in 1938. He played shortstop on the American Legion baseball teams during the 1930s, and later coached baseball for many years from little league to the Midget Blues. Warren served as a sergeant in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946, and his unit participated in the Battle of the Bulge during December, 1944. After the war he came back home to Columbus. On October 2, 1948 he married Barbara Schumacher at St. Bonaventure Church. Mel worked as a tool and die maker for 39 years at Behlen Manufacturing, and later worked at Fleischer Manufacturing for 6 years. He was a life-long member of St. Bonaventure Church, and served as a lector for many years. He was a member of American Legion Hartman Post #84 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dad enjoyed traveling, woodworking, stamp collecting, playing cribbage, and watching baseball. Indeed, during Warrens long yet short time on earth, he touched all the bases, and then he went Home.
Survivors include his wife Barbara Melliger; sons Craig (Judy) Melliger of Columbus, and Curt Melliger of Hesperus, Colorado; daughter Debra (Ron) Getchell of Beaverton, Oregon; sister Margaret (Richard) Nosal of Columbus; brothers Carroll (Doris) Melliger of Columbus, and Milt Melliger of Albuquerque, NM; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents, son Bruce Melliger, sisters Paula Mae Melliger and Doris Clemons, and brother Joseph Melliger.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Hospice Care Program at Columbus Community Hospital.
