Walter Gehring

Walter F. Gehring, age 83, of Columbus, Nebraska died Thursday May 16, 2002 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services are 2:00 p.m. Tuesday May 21, 2002 at the Bible Baptist Church in Columbus. Burial will be in the Roselawn Cemetery with military honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation is 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday and from 8:00 a.m. - 12 noon Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until service time at church.

Walter F. Gehring was born January 6, 1919 in rural Platte Center to Henry and Tena (Hassebrook) Gehring. He attended District #72 School. On October 2, 1941 Walter was united in marriage to Grace Kruse in Tyler, Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII from 1942 - 1945. Following the war Walter lived in Columbus & worked for Fleischer- Schmid Manufacturing. In 1949 he started Gehring Construction specializing in concrete work. In 1970 he started the Ready Mix Concrete Plant in Columbus. In 1979 Walter retired from Gehring Construction and was currently serving as Chairman of the Board. Walter was a member of the Bible Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher for 46 years, Sunday School Superintendent, & was a Church Board Officer. Walter enjoyed compiling Bible studies for the encouragement of others.
