Vernon Zimmerman of Columbus died Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Columbus Community Hospital.

Vernon LeRoy Zimmerman was born January 17, 1918 in Duncan, NE to Rudolph J. and Anna R. (Ernst) Zimmerman. Vern lived in Clarks from 1933-1941. He graduated from Clarks High School in 1934. Vern served in the US Army from 1941 until 1945 during World War II. He served with the 1st Infantry , 6th Infantry Division where he spent over two years in the South Pacific, Hawaii, New Guinea, and Luzon, Philippines. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with one Bronze Star and two Arrowheads. On October 11, 1947, Vern married Phyllis E. Carrell at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. They lived in Columbus where Vern worked for the US Postal Service for over 30 years. He served as the Postmaster from 1976-1980. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lebanon Lodge 323 AF & AM, VFW Post #3704, Hartman Post #84 American Legion, Noon Lions Club, and NARFE Chapter 1902 where he served as Past President. Vern also served on the Board of Directors of the Platte County Historical Society. Vern enjoyed reading, genealogy, internet surfing, and was an avid Bridge player.

Daughter Jane C. (Ray) Stier of Omaha, NE
Son Thomas V. (Karen) Zimmerman of Columbus, NE
Five Grandchildren: Stacy Vocelka, Neil Stier, Lisa Rogers, Shayla Sexton, and Tyler Romero
Seven Great Grandchildren: Joe Vocelka, Sam Vocelka, Jake Stier, Nate Stier, Seth Rogers, Carson Rogers, and Sawyer Sexton

He is preceded in death by:
