Vernon R. Long was born March 10, 1925 in Norfolk, NE to Robert and Frieda (Miller) Long. One day after graduating from Norfolk High School, Vern entered the US Army Air Corp where he served from 1943 until completing his tour of duty as a Staff Sergeant in 1945 . He flew in the 8th Army Air Corp over occupied Europe and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. On June 1, 1945 he was united in marriage to Ruth Young at the United Methodist Church in Norfolk. They moved to Columbus in 1948. Vern worked at Sears for many years until retiring in 1987. Vern was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was President of Keystone for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, and was a Boy Scout Leader and a master gardener.
