Sylvester Staroscik of Columbus died Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the Nebraska Heart Hospital in Lincoln.
Sylvester John Staroscik was born September 25, 1924 in Barnesville, MN to Ignatius and Clementena (Nosal) Staroscik. He lived in Barnesville until the age of 3 when his parents moved to Duncan, NE. He attended District 16 school, Columbus High School for 2 years, and graduated from Duncan High School in 1943. After graduating he went to work at a packing house in Omaha. He was drafted into the service one month later. He served in the US Army during World War II from 1943 until 1945. He served overseas in Europe and saw battles in Normandy, France, and along the Rhine River in Germany. Following his time in the service he worked for Uncle Ed at a service station in Duncan then went to Fresno, CA where he worked as a delivery man. Sylvester returned to Columbus where he worked for Swift & Co., Fleischer Manufacturing, and with Ray Micek Construction building homes. Sylvester re-enlisted in the Army from 1955-1958 where he was stationed in Fairbanks, AK. After an honorable discharge he went to work for Fred Egger Construction, BD Construction, and Behlen Manufacturing where he worked as a machinist. He retired at the age of 65. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, and was a lifetime member of VFW Post #3704.
