Roy T. Bower, age 80, of Monroe, Nebraska died Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 21, 2007 at the Monroe United Methodist Church with Reverends Gale Axen and Tamara Holtz officiating. Visitation is 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation continues Monday morning from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial is in the O'Kay Cemetery near Monroe with military honors by the American Legion Swanson Post #322 Honor Guard.
Roy T. Bower was born October 2, 1926 in Platte Center, Nebraska to Harold and Susie (Pinson) Bower. He attended District #11 School and graduated from Platte Center High School in 1944. Roy served in the U.S. Army during WWII from March 1945 - May 1946. On October 16, 1947 he was united in marriage to Velma L. Hashberger in Platte Center. Roy farmed in the Monroe and Platte Center area and worked as a hired hand for Billy Hill and Mervin Loseke. He was a rural mail carrier out of Monroe and Genoa for 30 years. Roy was a member of the American Legion in Platte Center and Monroe for 59 years. He served as County Legion Commander and held various offices in the Swanson Post #322. He was also a life member of the V.F.W. Roy was a volunteer for the Monroe Fire Department for 50 years. He helped form the Monroe Rural Fire District, taught Junior Fire Patrol and Red Cross, served on the Platte County Civil Defense and was secretary of the Mid-Nebraska Fireman's Association. Roy served as Scout Master for 30 years for Troop 213. He inducted 19 Eagle Scouts including his 3 sons. He received the Silver Beaver Award, Vigil Honor of the Order of the Arrow, 1964 Scout Master at Valley Forge, Pete Laker's Award and the Boy Scout Family Award. Roy belonged to the Loup Valley Gem and Mineral Society serving as President and Vice President. He was also a member of the Nebraska Rock and Mineral Society, the Northeast Nebraska Rock Club and was President and Vice President of the Nebraska State Association of Rock Clubs. He was a member of NARFE, AARP, Rural Carrier Association, editor of the Nebraska Rural Carrier State Paper and was President and Vice President of the National Editors Organization. He was a sponsor for the Nebraska Juniors and received the Carrier of the Year Award. Roy was a member and secretary of the Monroe Lions Club. He was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, Church Council, Lay Leader to the Annual Conference and was Treasurer of the Men's Brotherhood.
