Ronald "Blackie"Meyers, age 68 of Columbus, died Sunday February 4, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Fr. Christopher Grimmond officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday after 3:00 pm at McKown Funeral Home with a 7:00 pm vigil. Visitation will continue Wednesday 8:00 am until 10:00 am at the funeral home.
Ronald was born May 26, 1932 in Minot, North Dakota to Lonnie & Edith (Haines) Meyers.
He received his education at Lincoln High School. He was married at St. Mary's Catherdral in Lincoln on February 27, 1954 to Patricia Witkowski. He worked various construction jobs in Lincoln. He was instrumental in starting Capital City Bowhunters in Lincoln. He moved to Columbus in 1967 to work with Johansen Construction. He later started Meyers Construction. Along with the construction work he also operated a golf driving range on the east side of Columbus for a time. Following his retirement from construction he worked doing parking lot stripping and operated his food vending operation "Time To Eat" serving various community and athletic events.
He was a very active member of the Columbus Optimists Club where he held numerous offices and positions including Lieutenant Governor and Club President. He was a volunteer with the American Heart Association receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award. He was involved with youth athletics including area baseball leagues.
He was an avid golfer, enjoyed fishing, archery, deer hunting, bowling and gardening. He was the previous State Archery Record Holder in the white tail deer & buffalo carp categories.
