Robert "Bob" J. Korgie, age 82, of Columbus, Nebraska died Friday, December 16, 2005 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Del Lape officiating. Visitation is 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home and after 6:00 p.m. Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at St. Anthony Church. Visitation continues Wednesday morning from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. at McKown Funeral Home. Burial is in the All Saints Cemetery in Columbus with military honors by Hartman Post # 84 American Legion Honor Guard.
Robert "Bob" J. Korgie was born July 28, 1923 in Columbus, Nebraska to Charles and Victoria (Sus) Korgie. He attended grade school at St. Anthony's and then entered the St. Joseph Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. He also attended Northwestern University in Chicago. Bob served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1942-1948 being stationed on 6 Navy Destroyers. His tour of duty included the Normandy Invasion on D-Day. He then served in the Pacific Theater. Following his discharge Bob returned to Columbus where he was the second man hired at the Becton-Dickinson Plant. He married Claire (Reitz) Birkel on November 11, 1950 at St. Rose Of Lima Church in Genoa. The couple moved to San Pedro, California where they lived for 8 years. They returned to Nebraska in 1960 where Bob went to work for Dale Electronics retiring after 28 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, crossword puzzles, cards and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of St. Anthony Church, Knights Of Columbus and the V.F.W. #3704.
