Robert J Bob Dierman, 79, educator and retired principal of Columbus High School, passed away Friday, September 18th, 2015 at Brookestone Acres Rehabilitation Center in Columbus.
Bob was born on September 20th, 1935 in Tenafly, New Jersey. He received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of New Mexico in Santa Fe, where he was an active member of the marching band and a member of Sigma Delta Epsilon Fraternity. Bob then went on to earn his Master's Degree at Columbia University in New York City.
Bob began his teaching career at Mahwah Regional High School in New Jersey, where, in addition to teaching History, he helped coach the wrestling team and directed school plays. In 1963 he married Dorothy M. McCarthy, with whom he had two children. In 1969, Bob returned to the West that he loved, taking a position as Principal at Douglas High School, in Douglas, Wyoming. Bob was Principal of Douglas High School for 10 years. While in Douglas, Bob was an American Legion baseball coach and was active in local politics, serving on the City Council.
In 1979, Bob became Principal of Columbus Senior High School. Bob was the Principal for 21 years, retiring in May 2000. During his time in Columbus, Bob not only ran a tight ship at the High School, he also was a member of the Columbus Parks Commission, Kiwanis, the Knights of Columbus, the St. Isidores Parish Council, and a baseball coach for the American Legion, sharing his love and knowledge of the game with many of the area's youth for many years.
After Bob's retirement as Principal, he continued educating as a substitute teacher at the High School and at Scotus Central Catholic High School for many years, Bob also worked at the Columbus Public Library, and Apogee.
Bob was an advocate of the Arts, loving opera, orchestral music, and theater. These loves have been passed on to several of his Grandchildren. He was Grandpa who enjoyed spending time with his Grandchildren, and was always game to share soccer games, Scouting events, golf matches, basketball games, dance recitals, equestrian events, and concerts with them. Bob was an avid reader with a particular love of history, biography and mysteries. Bob was a model train enthusiast, model ship builder, and model airplane crafter. Bob also had a longstanding love affair with baseball and was a diehard Mets fan.
He is survived by his son, Karl Dierman of Columbus and by his daughter, Mary (William) Stock of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bob leaves behind 9 grandchildren: Derrick, Kara, Alaina, Avery, Kaelyn, and Jack Dierman, of Fremont and Columbus, and Benjamin (Whitney), Kate, and Maggie Stock of Memphis, Tennessee and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy (McCarthy) Dierman, and by his parents, Clarence J. and Ethel F. (Boyd) Dierman.
