Richard died Sunday, September 14, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas.
Richard F. Dick Brodfuehrer was born in Columbus, Nebraska on June 30,1933 to Ferd and Lucile (Burgess) Brodfuehrer. He played trumpet in the Kramer High Band and organized his first group, a five-piece combo when he was 16. The combo almost immediately booked a six month engagement at the Eagles Hall in Columbus. He graduated from Columbus (Kramer) High School in 1951. After high school, Dick attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in music and began the Rick Burgess Nu-Tones that played for dances in the Lincoln area and had a weekly program on the university radio station. He also attended the Lincoln School of Commerce. In 1952, Dick enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was temporarily assigned to the arranging staff at the Navy School of Music as a copyist. He then toured with the Sixth Fleet and Atlantic Fleet Bands until his discharge in 1956. After his discharge, Dick played in the house band at The Casino Ballroom in Virginia Beach VA and returned to Lincoln when the season ended. For the next eight years, he played trumpet and directed the stage and dance band with the Nebraska Army National Guard Band. Dick also played with show bands that accompanied groups such as The Lettermen. Paula Kelly and the Modernaires, The Four Freshmen and The Ice Capades when they performed in Lincoln. In addition, he arranged music and played trumpet for area dance bands and jazz ensembles. In 1960, Mr. Brodfuehrer began an accounting, administrative and internal auditing career. Champlin Petroleum, Western Auto, Sigmor Corp. were among his associations. He was Director of Auditing for Ultramar-Diamond Shamrock when he retired in 1977 and returned to his career as a music arranger and composer.
Mr. Brodfuehrer also served as Certified Internal Auditor and a Certified Fraud Examiner, past president of the Kansas City Chapter of the institute of Internal Auditors and the San Antonio Chapter of the Assoc. of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). He also served as chairman of the International Committee on Standards and Practices of the ACFE. Dick was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Navy Musicians Association and a former chairman of the MENSA Owl Fund.
He is survived by his daughter, Terri L. Brodfuehrer, granddaughter Brandi D. Hrasdzira and grandson, Zachary Armitage all of San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his wife Llen C. (Cox) Brodfuehrer and his parents, Lucile P. (Burgess) and Ferdinand G. Brodfuehrer.
