Richard J. Hiemer of Columbus died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial Hospital in Osceola.
Richard J. Hiemer was born March 14, 1924 on the family farm in rural Shelby, NE to John and Edith (Alt) Hiemer. He grew up and lived on the farm south of Shelby until entering the US Army during World War II. Richard served in the Philippines as a Tech Sargent. Following his time in the service, he returned to the family farm and married Doris Suddarth on June 22, 1948 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. They continued to farm south of Shelby until 1988 when they moved to Columbus. Richard served as Farmers Union District 5 Director, served on the Sacred Heart Church Board, and on the Aquinas High School Transportation Board. While living in Shelby he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was currently a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus. He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus in Shelby and a member of the VFW in Columbus. Richard enjoyed dancing, visiting with friends at the coffee shop, and attending auctions.
