All the world's a stage...

Richard Dick Averett made his debut Feb. 5, 1936 in Gooding, Idaho. After carousing around the world of theater, stage acting and this comedy/drama we call "life," he gave his final bow at his home in Columbus, Nebraska on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014. Reviews were generally positive, although no encore performance is expected.

Dick was a good man, but he'd be the first to tell you of his flaws, complete with illustrations if you asked. He served in the Marines in the late 1950's, playing saxophone with the First Marine Division band, where woodwinds ruled. Like a true disciple of Sousa, he marched smartly through his post-Corps life and (eventually) graduated from Idaho State University with a Masters in Speech and Theater.

It was during college that he met Barbara Reifschneider, taking her as his wife and co-director on December 5, 1959 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Together they invented nearly a half-dozen people:

Col. Tami Averett-Brauer (Gary Brauer), U.S. Air Force, Hawaii; children Erich Brauer and daughter Brock Ann, Heather Brauer and daughter Kamelyn
Miki (Jeff) Naylor of Columbus; children Andy (Megan) Naylor, Katie (Matt) Parlane, Sara (Kyle) Becker and son Max, and Megan Naylor
Suzi (Scott) Zwick of Columbus; children Nathan (Tami) Zwick, and 1st Lt. Justin (Danielle) Zwick, U.S. Army
Gigi (Steve) Berol of Ogallala, Neb.; children Craig Berol and Courtney Berol
Capt. Cris Averett, U.S. Army Reserve, Louisville, Neb.

During his 30-year theatrical career, Dick acted, directed, and/or produced more than 250 plays for Platte College and the Platte Valley Playhouse. His accolades were many, his critics were few and his hair was always dapper. His greatest theatrical pride was a summer production of "Carousel," when all seven of the Averetts shared the stage at one time.

He loved his family, music, the number 27, and was an arm-chair "Jeopardy! champ. Despite being a lifelong left-hander, Dick overcame it to shoot a none-too-shabby round of golf.

He was preceded in death by his father, August, his mother, Iris, and his little sister, Ginny.

In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Platte Valley Playhouse (P.O. Box 1161 Columbus, NE, 68601) in order to establish the Averett Theatre Scholarship in his honor.

Dick's final curtain call will be held Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1:00pm in the Central Community College Fine Arts Theater in Columbus. The family will host an Open House cast party following the service at The Shadows until 6:00pm.
