Ray died Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Columbus Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Ray Beckman was born August 22, 1940 in Howells, Nebraska to Lawrence and Adeline (Novotny) Beckman. They later moved to Albion, Nebraska where Ray received his education. On August 4, 1958 Ray joined the U.S. Navy, where he attained the rank of 2nd Class Personnelman. He spent four years on ships home ported mostly in Japan. His travels took him to many countries in the Orient. He was very proud of his naval experiences and shared many stories of his adventures. On August 25, 1962 Ray married Norma Liebig at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Platte Center, Nebraska. They lived in San Diego, California and O'Neill, Nebraska before settling in Columbus. To this union five children were born. The have 11 grandchildren. Ray retired from GTE after 29 years as traffic engineer. He then was employed by Midco Cable Company and Camaco. He had a part-time business as a handyman. Never a person to remain idle, even through his illness until April of 2010, Ray worked at Apogee.
He was interested in many things but especially enjoyed the challenge of renovating autos, buildings or anything with which someone was having a difficulty. He was known for his great kindness, empathy and generous gift of time to all. He enjoyed family, grandchildren, fishing, hunting and reading, especially history. He completed an extensive family genealogy. In later years he enjoyed going to the casino with his wife. Ray was a member of St. Anthony Church.
