Norma June Peterson

July 10, 1926 — October 22, 2015

Norma June Peterson, the daughter of Audrey (Kugler) and Ralph Williams, was born July 10, 1926 in Smith County, Kansas. She departed this life on October 22, 2015 at the Cottonwood Home in Columbus, Nebraska at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 12 days.

Norma June grew up in the Thornburg community in Smith County. She received her formal education attending school at Bucklin, Kansas where she graduated in 1944. She then received her certificate in normal training in Dodge City, Kansas. In 1972, Norma June earned her Bachelors Degree from Hastings College.

On August 20, 1945 she was united in marriage with Harold Frederick Cub Peterson at Smith Center, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children, Ricky Marland, Ramona Adeline and Ronald Keith. They lived for a time in Smith County, Kansas, Denver, Cowles and Inavale before settling in Red Cloud. Norma June taught in a number of Webster County schools and then was employed for twenty-six years with the Red Cloud Public Schools, retiring in 1988.

Norma June possessed an immeasurable drive and desire to serve others. Her teaching career was driven by her passion to educate and share with her many students. Her mother died when Norma June was twelve and from that time forward she was committed to caring and nurturing each of her seven younger brothers and sisters.

She was involved in a number of civic and community organizations including the Congregational Church; Chapter Y P.E.O., the Order of Eastern Star, the Dapper Dozen and the Auld Public Library Board. Following her retirement she served as the Webster County Superintendent of Schools, she served on the Red Cloud Board of Education and was a tour guide for many years with the Willa Cather Foundation, an organization she supported and was active in since its inception. In her leisure time Norma June enjoyed reading and receiving family and friends into her home. Her greatest love and enthusiasm in life was for her family and she especially cherished time spent with them. Due to her failing health, she moved to Columbus, Nebraska in August of 2011 to be near her daughter, Ramona.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Cub, on January 22, 1989; a daughter-in-law, Vickie Peterson; a sister JoAnne Nichelson and a brother, Arden Williams.

Left to treasure her memory are her children Rick Peterson of Blair, Nebraska; Ramona Kluth and husband Doug of Columbus, Nebraska, and Ron Peterson and wife Robin of Red Cloud; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Roma Timmons of Phillipsburg, Kansas; Wanda Wear of Carthage, Illinois and Sylvia Andersen of Red Cloud; brothers, Donn Williams of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Gayle Williams and wife Cherri of Pueblo, Colorado; other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held Monday, 10:30 a.m., October 26, 2015 at the Congregational Bible Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Gary Bennett officiating. Inurnment will be at the Red Cloud Cemetery.

No visitation will be held.
