Mildred was raised in Lincoln, NE, and graduated from Lincoln General Hospital in 1946. She was very proud of being a registered nurse. Mildred was a charter member of the Nurses Cadet Corp and, as an R.N., did private duty during her first years, worked at Lincoln General Hospital for 14 years, and later worked in Columbus at St. Marys Hospital.
Mildred married Herbert Honke on June 7, 1948, and to this union 3 children were born: Michael Paul, Vicki Ann, and Terry Lee. She has been a resident of Columbus, NE, since 1962 and has been a member of The Federated Church since June 1963. She enjoyed her work and fellowship at the church with singing in the choir for over 40 years, worked the TV dinners for 25 years, attended Bible Study and Early Birds for 25 years, and worked with Christ Care for 9 years.
Mildred and Herbert loved to travel and took several vacations around the United States including a trip to Alaska, New England and Europe. They were avid Husker Football fans, and Mildred was also known as "Mild Red". She enjoyed working in her flower gardens. Nothing made Mildred happier than to be surrounded by her family. Holiday gatherings were special to her, and she loved her family very much, especially seeing her grandchildren and her great-grand children.
Mildred was preceded in death by Herbert, her parents, her grandson, Stephen Shonka, plus her brothers, Alvin, Kenneth, and Richard, and her sister, Alvina. She is survived by her children Michael and Martha Honke, Columbus; NE; Vicki and Duane Hodge, Ashland, NE; and Terry and Connie Honke, Lincoln, NE.
