Michael D. Vuncannon Sr.

May 5, 1943 — April 26, 2024

Michael David VunCannon Sr. went to heaven peacefully Friday morning, surrounded by his family at his home in Columbus, NE.

Mike was born on May 5th, 1943, in Flint, Michigan to Carl and Sophia VunCannon. He graduated from Flint Southwestern High School in 1961. After high school Mike went to college at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, where he met his wife, Lana. Mike and Lana were married in December of 1966. Upon graduating from Graceland in 1970, Mike started his teaching and coaching career in West Liberty, Iowa where he taught life science and physical education while coaching football, wrestling, baseball, and golf. In 1976, Mike took a similar teaching and coaching position in Storm Lake, Iowa where his two children, Michael and Michelle, graduated from high school. Upon retirement in 2008, Mike and Lana spent 10 years in Custer SD before making a final move to Columbus, NE to be closer to children and grandchildren in Columbus and KC.

Some of Mike's favorite activities included playing golf, hunting, and watching his children and grandchildren's activities. He also enjoyed traveling with Lana around the country to visit family and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Sophia and grandson Dustin.

He is survived by his wife Lana of Columbus, NE, his brother, Carl Jr. (Leta) of Independence, MO, son Michael (Jenni) of Columbus, NE, daughter Michelle Heacock (Doug) of Lee's Summit, MO, John (Lana's brother) and Sharon Gatenby of Loveland, CO, Mary Gatenby (Lana's sister) and Bob Sutphin of Greeley, CO, 8 grandchildren and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Mike's memorial service is planned for May 19th, at 2:30pm CT in the Mission Woods Community of Christ church at 2800 NW Duncan Road, Blue Springs, MO 64015
