Melvin "Jim" Wessel, age 73, of Columbus, Nebraska died Thursday, June 2, 2005 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 6, 2005 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Jeff Loseke officiating. Visitation is 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Sunday at McKown Funeral Home and after 6:00 p.m. Sunday at St. Isidore Church. A Vigil Service will be held 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the church with Reverend Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Visitation continues Monday morning from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. at McKown Funeral Home. Burial is in the All Saints Cemetery in Columbus with Military Honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard.
Melvin "Jim" Wessel was born September 7, 1931 in Lindsay, Nebraska to Jacob and Amelia (Zwiener) Wessel. He received his early education in St. Bernard and Humphrey. He married Betty Borer on February 15, 1954 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lindsay, Nebraska. He served in the United States Army from 1955-1957 where he was stationed in Germany. Upon his discharge Jim moved to Columbus. He worked at Behlen Manufacturing for 27 years. Jim was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, Knights Of Columbus and the Eagles Club. Jim enjoyed woodworking.
