Maurice A. "Maurie" Melcher, age 76, of Columbus died Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at the Columbus Community Hospital after a short batttle with cancer. Funeral service are 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 25, 2006 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. Visitation is Sunday 4-6 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home and after 7:00 p.m. at the church. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at church. Visitation will continue Monday morning 8:00-10:00a.m. at the McKown Funeral Home. Burial with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Bonaventure Church, Columbus Area Right to Life, or the Humane Society.
Mr. Melcher was born on January 26th, 1930, in Platte Center, Nebraska to parents Arnold and Sylvia (Langan) Melcher. He attended St. Bonaventure High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948-1952 which, included 18 months in Korea. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1957. He worked for Kosch Company and in 1970 became co-founder of Industrial Engineering Company and served as president for 33 years during which time he designed and manufactured production equipment. Mr. Melcher retired in 2003. He was a member of the church where he served as a trustee, usher and endowment committee member. He participated in Perpetual Adoration for many years. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 938, the American Legion Hartman Post 84, VFW, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He enjoyed skiing, sailing, dancing and his dogs. Surviving are his wife, Judy, son Scott Melcher of Oakland, California, two daughters, Christine (Rob) Donnelly of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Marin (Greg) Hacker of Lincoln, and grandchildren, Hayden and Sophia Hacker, brother Paul (Betty) Melcher, of Lexington South Carolina, and sisters, Joyce (Jack) Risor of Huntsville, Arkansas, Janet (Darwin) McWilliams, of Columbus, Sue Vavak of Omaha, and sisters-in-law, Helen Melcher of Longmont, Colorado, and Karen Melcher, of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Sylvia Melcher, brothers Gerald, Ronald, David, and a nephew Billy Risor.
