Martin Shemek, age 80, of Columbus died Saturday, September 10, 2005 at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. Graveside services with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard are 10:00 am Wednesday at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Duncan. The Rev. Frank Jindra will officiate.
Martin Shemek was born September 20, 1924 in Osceola, Nebraska to Louis and Stacia Shemek. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Osceola High School. He entered the United States Army on December 21, 1944 and served until December 5, 1946. He served in the Philippine Islands. Martin returned to the Columbus area where he worked at Henke Manufacturing and at Wayne Feeds. Martin was married to Dorothy Niedzwiecki. In 2002 Martin entered the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #3704 and American Legion Hartman Post #84. He served on the American Legion Hartman Post Honor Guard and was a past recipient of the Keith Byran Award.
