Mark A. "Barney" Bartholomew passed away at his home on April 4th, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at St. Isidore Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Miksch and Rev. Bill Cremers celebrating the Mass. Visitation is Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service, all at the church. Interment is in All Saints Cemetery.
Mark was born on April 9th, 1959, in Columbus, Nebraska, the fifth of Verner and Marilyn (Gahan) Bartholomew's six children. He graduated from Scotus Central Catholic High School and Southeast Community College in Milford. Mark was united in marriage to Carlene Preister in 1983. They had two daughters.
Mark had a career in quality control at Camaco, Preferred Sands, and Paige Electric– a perfect match for his detail-oriented personality– until he retired after being diagnosed with ALS in 2024.
Mark enjoyed being active. He participated in a variety of sports, notably softball, golf, and fishing. Above all else, Mark cherished spending time with his family. The yearly family vacations across the country were important to him. He especially liked visiting Minnesota, which he called "God's country."
Mark loved spending time at the family cabin on Riverview Lake. He had a soft spot for animals, befriending and feeding countless squirrels, ducks, and cats at the cabin over the years. He was always there to lend a hand to family and friends. He never hesitated to help his daughters with their many moves, whether in-state or out, even though he would say he was "getting too old for this!"
Mark is survived by his wife Carlene; daughters Chelsea of Los Angeles and Carrie (Adam Kiehn) of Lincoln; mother Marilyn Bartholomew; sisters and brother Diane (Mark) Kudron, Pat Brezina, Dick Bartholomew, and Julie Bartholomew; brothers- and sisters-in-law Lenny (Miriam) Preister, Kenny Preister, Mary Birkel, Linda (Jim) Davis, and Carol (Doug Chmelka); and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by several pets, including his favorite cat Xena ("the perfect one" according to Mark.)
He was preceded in death by his father Verner Bartholomew; sister Joni; father- and mother-in-law Vic and Mildred Preister; brothers-in-law Garry Gragert and Gary Brezina; sisters-in-law Roxanne Bartholomew and Jan Preister; and nephew Eric Kudron.
