Margaret Ann Peterson, age 89, passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Augustana Lutheran Church, with Celebrant Chase Cherry officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Genoa.

Margaret Ann Peterson was born on October 5, 1937, in Fresno, California, to John and Elsie (Berggren) Garling. After spending her early years in California, Margaret and her family returned to Nebraska, settling on the family farmstead near Genoa. She attended a rural country school before graduating from Genoa High School in 1955. Following graduation, Margaret continued her education at Wayne State Teachers College, where she pursued her interest in teaching.

On February 17, 1957, Margaret was united in marriage to Berdell Peterson at Augustana Lutheran Church. Margaret taught in rural country schools before dedicating herself to raising her family and creating a loving home. Once her children were grown, she returned to the workforce, holding positions at the Co-op in St. Edward, and at Community Drug and Gambles in Genoa. She also served as a dispatcher for the Nance County Sheriff's Department. Throughout her working years, Margaret was known for her dedication and willingness to lend a helping hand.

Faith was an important part of Margaret's life. She was a longtime member of Augustana Lutheran Church, where she actively participated in various church groups and prayer circles. Her church family and the friendships she formed there held a special place in her heart.

Margaret’s many hobbies included being a prolific quilter, master fisherwoman, and becoming a seasoned camper. Margaret was a very serious card player. She especially enjoyed playing a few, maybe intense, games of Pitch and Rummy with her friends.
