Louis "Fish" Shank, age 89, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday August 6, 2003 at the Beverly Health Care in Columbus. Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday August 9, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with Reverend Timothy White officiating. Burial is in the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation is 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Friday at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation continues Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at the church. A Family Prayer Service will be held 10:15 a.m. Saturday also at the church.
Louis "Fish" Shank was born July 10, 1914 in Red Oak, Iowa to Harry & Emily (Maier) Shank Sr.. He lived in Red Oak and then the family moved to Columbus where Louis graduated from Kramer High School in 1932. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-1945. Louis married Ruth Kallweit on February 6, 1943 in Little Rock, Ark. After the war, Fish and Ruth moved back to Columbus where he worked in the dry cleaning business until he retired in 1979. Louis "Fish" Shank was in the Columbus Volunteer Fire Dept, 1st Hose Co. for 31 years. Life Member of VFW Post 3704., 50 year member of Hartman Post #84 American Legion. He and his brother Harry activated the Columbus National Guard. He also worked part time at the Columbus Races.
He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
