Louis died Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Columbus.
Louis John Birkel was born July 15, 1921 in Surprise, Nebraska to John J. and Bessie E. (Masek) Birkel. He graduated from Shelby High School in 1940. Louis served in the U.S. Army during WWII from July 1942 November 1945. On September 24, 1945 he was united in marriage to Fern K. Kiser in Belleville, Kansas. Louis worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years. After retiring from the Postal Service Louis drove cars for Ernst Auto which he enjoyed very much. Louis was a member of St. Isidore Church, Holy Name, St. Isidore Council Knights of Columbus #12086, V.F.W. #3704, Hartman Post #84 American Legion and the D.A.V. where he served as treasurer. Louis enjoyed gardening, sporting events, playing cards and visiting with friends and family.
