Loretta Sandoz

Loretta M. Sandoz, age 96, of Columbus,formerly of Center, Nebraska died Sunday, April 4, 2010 at David Place in David City.

Loretta was born to James R. and Martha (Gehrts) Cain in Pierce Co. on November 16, 1913. She attended rural schools, St. Ludger's Academy, Center High School and graduated from Creighton High School in 1930. She held a teacher's certificate from Wayne State College and taught rural schools for four years.

Loretta was united in marriage to Bernard Sandoz on February 4, 1934 at St. Ludger's church in Creighton. The couple lived in Omaha and Fairbury. Two children were born to them, Rita and Neal.

After the death of her husband in 1940 she and the two children moved back to Center, Nebr. She began employment in the Knox Co. Clerk's office. After 5 years of service in that office she served as Deputy Co. Treasurer for 15 years until 1961. She then worked in the Co. Welfare and Social Services office for 19 years, serving as Director from 1974 -1980. At her retirement in 1980 she was honored by the Knox Co. Board of Supervisors for 40 years of service to Knox Co.

After her retirement she moved to Columbus to be near family. In 2008 she moved to Cottonwood Assisted Living, then to Meridian Gardens and for the last six months has lived at David Place in David City.
Loretta was a member of St. Isidore's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and was involved with prayer line for several years.

Loretta is survived by two children, Rita (Bruce) Murray of Columbus and Neal (Dorothy) Sandoz of Lincoln. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 18 greatgrandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, two stepgreat grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Raymond and Lawrence (Rosalie) Cain and several nieces and nephews.
