Lloyd John Cooper died Monday, April 18, 2011 at his home in Columbus.
LLoyd John Cooper was born April 21, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska to Dr. Albert Lloyd and Elsie (Yost) Cooper. While in high school he enjoyed playing football, tennis, track, swimming, hiking, fishing, hunting, and flying, played in the Scottsbluff High School band and orchestra and obtained his Eagle Scout award. John served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from May, 1943-December, 1945 as a flight instructor and Aerographer. He married Phyllis Anne Chadwick on May 20, 1944 at Lyman, Nebraska. They were married 66 years. The couple lived in Philadelphia, Miami, California, Lincoln, and Falls City before moving to Columbus in 1976. John worked for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Asst Professor of Zoology Colorado A & M College, Fort Collins, Nebraska Department of Health as Limnologist & Radiological Health Advisor, acting director of Laboratories for Nebraska Department of Civil Defense, worked for University of California Radiation Laboratory, Health Chemistry Dept, Berkeley, as Chemist and Technical Coordinator, published several papers for scientific journals. Membership in several professional and honorary scientific associations, including the Health Physics Society. John worked for Consumers Public Power District, Lincoln, and for 31 years for Nebraska Public Power District at Halam, Brownville and Columbus, retiring as Environmental Manager.
John belonged to the Federated Church in Columbus, the Elks Club, Hartman Post #84 American Legion, Masonic Craftsman Lodge in Lincoln, Lebanon Lodge in Columbus, Eastern Star Starcraft Chapter in Lincoln, Pawnee Shrine Club, Sesostris Shrine in Lincoln and the Mystic Shrine 33rd degree Scottish Rite Freemasonry Supreme Council, S.J.. John enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, woodworking, golfing and doing charitable work, especially for the Shrine Hospital.
