Linda Walters, age 62, of rural Rising City, died Saturday, July 28, 2012 at her home.
Linda was born October 30, 1949 in Columbus, Nebraska to Ervin and Naomi (Bradshaw) Walters. She grew up in Columbus, graduated from Columbus High School in 1968 and completed several classes at Platte Community College.
Linda worked for Dale Electronics and for her uncle, Eugene Walter, as an assistant in his dental office before beginning her career with the City of Columbus in 1974 as an Account Clerk II in the Accounting Department. In May of 1980 she transferred to the City Clerk's Office and on October 1, 1985 was promoted to City Clerk-Treasurer. During her tenure as City Clerk-Assistant Finance Director she served under four mayors.
In 1993 Linda was recognized for her exceptional work in guiding the preparation of the city budget due to the absence of a Finance Director and was honored with the City's Exemplary Service Award. In 2002, Linda again received an Exemplary Service Award for her volunteer service and dedication promoting the operations of the Columbus Junior City Council. She was an advisor for the Columbus Junior City Council from 1997 until 2008.
Linda was a member of the Risk Management Committee, Police Pension Committee, Fire Pension Committee and the Nebraska League of Municipalities.
Linda married Wes Baxa on January 22, 2007 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. Linda had a great love for animals, the outdoors and she and Wes especially enjoyed living on their acreage with their horses, dog and cat. Linda enjoyed playing the piano and attending activities of family members with Wes. She was a very loving and care-giving person. Linda was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Linda is survived by her husband: Wes Baxa of rural Rising City, brothers: Ken (Kathy) Walters of Columbus and Edward (Gail) Walters of Broomfield, CO, nieces: Carrie (Patrick) Prentice of Omaha and Kelly (Dan) McPherron of Topeka, KS, nephew: Jon (Sadie) Walters of Albuquerque, NM, stepchildren: Lynn Rex of Lincoln, NE, Lisa (Ron) Swiatek of Denton, NE and Mark (Debra) Baxa of Charlotte, NC, grandchildren: Danielle, Michaela, Jonathan and Justin Swiatek, Brittany and Austin Baxa, great nieces and nephew: Emma, Lane & Paige Prentice and Alexia & Natalia Walters.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, step son: Michael Baxa.
