Leonard E. Simanek of Longmont,Colorado, formerly of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, November 27, 2006 at the Hospice Care of Boulder and Broomfield Counties Care Center in Louisville. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00pm Friday, Dec. 1, 2006 at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. The Vigil Service will be at 7:00pm Friday at McKown Funeral Home. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:00am Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006 at St. Isidores Catholic Church in Columbus. Interment at St. Marys Cemetery David City, Nebraska with military honors by American Legion Post #125 and V.F.W. Post #5814 Honor Guard. He was born June 25, 1919 in David City, Nebraska to Joseph E. and Hattie (Adam) Simanek. He was raised in David City and graduated David City High School in 1938.
He was a member of Company M of the Nebraska National Guard in Seward 1938-1940. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corp on Oct. 8, 1940. His WWII service included combat duty for 16 months in the Pacific and 17 months in Europe. He was Honorably Discharged on Sept. 27, 1947.
On June 18, 1946 he married Lucille Dvorak at Appleton Parish in Butler County. Following his marriage Mr. Simanek lived in David City until 1980, then Columbus, Nebraska. He recently, on June 10, 2006 moved to Longmont. Colorado to be near his daughter. He was a sales associate with Diers Supply from April 1967 to August 1996. Mr. Simanek was a member of St. Isidore's Catholic Church, Columbus, Nebraska, the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He will be remembered as a man who knew everyone, was always friendly, a stranger was never a stranger for long. He was as cut-up and tease leading his friends to nickname him Onery
Mr. Simanek is survived by his wife Lucille of Longmont, two sons Thomas E. Simanek and his wife Pam of Shenandoah, Iowa and Steven E. Simanek and his wife Sandra of Abeline, Texas, one daughter Janet Hillburn and her husband Glenn of Longmont, a sister Marcella Whitley and her husband Donald of Golden, Colorado, ten grandchildren Amanda Tate and her husband Damian, Jesse Hough, Jenny Hough, Jody Hacker and her husband Mike, Jillian Williams and her husband James, Benjamin Simanek and his wife Nichole, Lesley Jensen and her husband David, Daniel Simanek, Jaque Simanek and Frankie Simanek and 6 great grandchildren.
