Leonard Kula, age 91, of Columbus, Nebraska died Friday, March 10, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Home in Osceola, Nebraska. Funeral Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 16, 2006 at the St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus with Reverend Dave Fulton officiating. Visitation is 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation continues Thursday morning from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. also at the funeral home. Burial is in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus with military honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard.
Leonard Marcellinus Kula was born October 6,1914 in Madison, Nebraska, to John and Bell (Stempek) Kula. He attended school in Duncan, Nebraska and graduated from Duncan High School. After graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1940. After receiving his degree, Leonard enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in May of 1941, serving with the 62nd fighter squadron as an Airplane Armorer, where he was decorated with the American Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Leaf Cluster and Distinguished Unit Badge. He arrived in the United States from England on the Queen Mary in September 1945 after which he was honorably discharged.
Leonard married Frances Bernecki on September 1st 1947, in a double wedding with her sister Elizabeth (Elmer) Robak, at St. Anthonys Church in Columbus Nebraska. At the time of their wedding, Leonard worked as a manager of Duncan Grain, until they moved to Britton South Dakota in 1954. While in Britton, Leonard worked for the U.S. Government, making farm loans. After he retired in 1974, they moved to Columbus, Nebraska, where Frances died in 1983. Leonard lived in Columbus until moving to the Osceola Good Samaritan Center in 2001, where he stayed until his passing.
Leonard was a long time member of St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus, Nebraska as well as a member of the American Legion and the Catholic Order of Foresters. As a young man, Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with Frances. As an older man, Leonard enjoyed gardening, playing the Accordion and listening to polish music.
Survivors include his sister in-law, Bernice (Dominic) Kula of Omaha, NE; five nieces, Mary Kay (Roger) Sullivan of Omaha, NE Judith Kula of Aspen CO Theresa (William) Elder of Dublin Ireland, Mary Ann (Jim) Maslonka of Columbus, NE and Mary Lee Fuxa of Arlington, VA; twelve nephews, John Kula of Omaha, NE Dave Robak, Dan (Marilyn) Robak, Steve Robak, John (Angell) Robak, Jim Robak, Mark (Kristen) Robak, Tim Robak, Bernard Zarek and Dominic Zarek all of Columbus, NE Jim (Diane) Fuxa of Baton Rouge LA and Mike (Jan) Robak of Schaumberg, Illinois. Many Great, and Great Great Nieces and Nephews also survive Leonard.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bell Kula; his wife Frances (Bernecki) Kula; his sister, Helen (William) Tomka and two brothers, Theodore and Dominic Kula.
