Leo Henggeler was born July 15, 1930 on a farm in Platte County to Leonard and Lucille (Welch) Henggeler. He grew up on the farm, then lived in Wolbach for a short time before moving to Columbus. Leo worked at Liebschwager Disposal Service, exercised horses for a local trainer, and also participated in work programs at Northstar Services.
Leo enjoyed being around animals, especially horses. His apartment was filled with pictures of horses, including pictures of the many times he rode them and of the time he spent at his sister-in-law' s ranch watching the spring colts grow up. Leo liked being outdoors and was a seasoned mower, gardener, and fisherman. After he became a part of Northstar Services, he raised a garden every year and always made sure his bird feeder was completely full. He liked being with family and with his Northstar family. He particularly looked forward to their dances. Leo was involved in Special Olympics where he excelled in bowling having won many trophies and ribbons. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church.
