Larry Lee Wallingford, 83, of Columbus, passed away with his family by his side on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Mory's Haven in Columbus, NE.
Larry was born February 3, 1935, near Arlington, NE. He grew up in Fremont, NE and graduated from Fremont High School in 1953. Larry served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956, achieving the rank of Specialist 3rd Class while stationed at Fort Bliss near El Paso, TX. Following his service to his country, Larry attended Wayne State College in Wayne, NE. He graduated with a degree in education on May 27, 1960 and on the same day was joined in marriage to Donann Cadwell at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wayne. Larry taught high school in Rockford, IA from 1960 to 1963 and in Central City, NE from 1963 to 1965. Following his years teaching, he worked in the insurance industry as a claims adjuster and later in sales.
Larry's hobbies included watching sports, working in his garden and fishing. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. His three children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren were a tremendous source of pride and joy to him as a family man. His role as a grandfather was one that he cherished deeply. His grandchildren all lovingly refer to him as "Poppie". Although he was close to all his grandchildren, his granddaughter Rachel, was very dear to him as she provided care in his later years. They spent a great deal of time together; reading, walking their dogs, watching baseball and talking. Those memories will always be treasured.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and most recently by his daughter, Lynn Wallingford Egger.
He is survived by his wife D. (Donann) Wallingford; sons Scott (Shannon) and Don (Tina) Wallingford; granddaughters Rachel Egger and Maya Wallingford, grandsons Ben, Jacob (Ashley), Caleb (Melody), Coby, and Rylan Wallingford; great granddaughters Aspen, Janie and Whitley Wallingford and great grandson Roman Wallingford.
