Kasimer Zaura died Thursday, August 31, 2017 at the Columbus Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Kasimer Zaura, son of Lithuanian immigrants Ralph and Victoria (Likpetris) Zaura, was born July 9, 1921 on a farm near Madison, Nebraska. Kasimer, the fourth of six children, grew up on a farm between Creston and Madison, and attended rural Liberty school thru the 12th grade. After graduation, he helped his father on the farm for a few years while his older three brothers were serving in branches of the service. Kasimer himself enlisted and entered the Army during WWII on August 7, 1942. Proud to be in the 128th Infantry and serving in 32nd Division, he was wounded in action on February 3, 1944 near Saidor, New Guinea. Spending three years in V.A. care, he was honorably discharged on March 21, 1947. Kasimer received numerous medals including the Purple Heart.
Following his discharge, Kasimer was trained to be a linotype operator for printing. He married Shirlee Schwank, daughter of Edward and Alma (Studts) Schwank of rural Madison, on November 15, 1953 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Nebraska. This marriage was blessed with two sons, Jan in 1955 and Steve in 1963. Kasimer worked at a print shop in Omaha for three years prior to joining the Columbus Telegram where he worked for 28 years, retiring in 1986.
Kasimer enjoyed listening to music from the 1940's and Big Band era, repairing old clocks, antique actions, being a shade tree mechanic, Cubs baseball, Husker sports, Columbus High basketball games, watching the History channel and NET.
