Joyce D. Katainen died Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Edgewood Memory Care in Columbus, NE.

A Celebration of Joyce's Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2026, at McKown Funeral Home.

Joyce was born to Arvid and Mae Savela on January 20, 1932. She was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Sebeka, Minnesota. She attended school in Sebeka and graduated in June 1950. Joyce played percussion in the band. After graduation, she went to Felt-Forrest Business School in Chicago Illinois. Joyce married John Ray Katainen at Ruston, Louisiana on October 19, 1951. they had one son, Bryon, who was born and died on October 7, 1954. Her husband, John R., was in the Air Force. They traveled and lived in several cities where he was stationed. Joyce worked as an accountant and various businesses in those cities. They lived in Tampa, Florida, Omaha, Nebraska, Fairbanks, Alaska, Grand Forks, North Dakota and then Denver, Colorado. They moved to Columbus Nebraska in December 2019 to be closer to family.

And several nieces and nephews
