Josephine M. Merrill, age 96, of Columbus died Saturday, April 1, 2006 at Mory's Haven in Columbus. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. The Rev. Tom Weisbecker will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday 4-8 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home. There will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary and a 7:00 p.m. vigil service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the St. Bonaventure Church

Josephine M. Merrill was born May 27, 1909 on a farm in Medford, Oregon to Seth and Mary (Tighe) Moseley The family is of Irish and English origin. She was just an infant when her family moved from Oregon to Colorado and then to Bancroft, Nebraska. Her father passed away before she was 6 years old so her mother moved the family to West Point, Nebraska. Jo attended country school and Catholic School in West Point. She graduated from the 8th grade near Valentine, Nebraska. Jo attended her high school years in Columbus and graduated from St. Francis Girl's Academy (Scotus). She had also taken summer courses at Peru State College. She married Wayne L. Merrill on August 7, 1928 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. Jo worked as a stenographer for a wholesale grocery store until her first child was born. When the first child was 6 years old she went to work for the Welfare Office. She worked there for 15 years and then accepted a job as Clerk of the County Court in Columbus eventually being promoted to Associate Judge. She worked with 3 different County Judges over 20 years until her retirement in 1977. Jo and Wayne where married 36 years before his death in 1964. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church where she served as the first secretary to the council, Secular Order of Franciscans, Perpetual Adoration, Soroptimist International of Columbus and Sugar and Spice Extension Club.

Daughter: Mary Ann (Herb) Jahn of Lake Forrest, CA
Daughter: Frances (Gene) Tollini of Louisville, TX
16 Grandchildren 26 Great Grandchildren



She was preceded in death by:

Grandson: Christopher J. Merrill
Parents: Seth Moseley and Mary (Tighe) Moseley
Brothers: Bill, Bob, Edward, Gene, Joseph Moseley
