Reverend John Herbert Mikkelsen, age 83, of Columbus died Sunday May 20, 2001 at the Columbus Manor in Columbus, Nebraska.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday May 24, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Reverend M. Wendell Davis officiating. Visitation is from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus and from 9:00 a.m. until servicetime Thursday at the Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the Edgar Cemetery in Edgar, Nebraska.
John Herbert Mikkelsen was born October 25, 1917 in Edgar, Nebraska to Charlie and Rosa (Althouse ) Mikkelsen. He graduated from Edgar High School, McCook Junior College, Hastings College and Drew University Seminary in New Jersey. He married Ruth Ahlstrom on April 4, 1941. She passed away on November 21, 1979. He later married Edra Davis on January 18, 1981.
Reverend Mikkelsen served Nebraska Methodist Churches at Hildreth, Maywood, Imperial, Gordon, Aurora, and Gothenburg. He also served as District Superintendent of the Nebraska Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church Southwest District. His final church assignment was for the First United Methodist Church in Columbus where he has resided since.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, & was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a scout leader. He served on the Gothenburg School Board, Board of Trustees for Nebraska Wesleyan University, member of the Silver-haired Legislature & Board member of the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha. He served as a Methodist Minister in the Nebraska Annual Conference for over 50 years, and was involved in Nebraska Methodist Camps.
He is survived by:

Sister: Christine Woods of Hasting, Nebraska
Brother: Robert Mikkelsen of Edgar, Nebraska
