JoAnn D. Peterson of Columbus passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009 at her home after a lengthy illness with Parkinson's disease.

JoAnn was born March 6, 1932 to Herman & Lena (Dittman) Walters at Elgin, Nebraska. She was raised near Oakdale, NE and graduated from high school there in 1949. She attended Wayne State College and taught elementary school at a schoolhouse near Oakdale. She married Richard Peterson on August 20, 1950 at Oakdale Methodist Church. They made their home with Richards parents northeast of Neligh until the Air Force took them to Texas, and then Topeka, KS. Different jobs moved them to Neligh, Lamita CA, and then Norfolk. While in Norfolk JoAnn worked at Henningston Egg Plant. They then moved to Greenville, MS and in 1966 moved to Columbus where they have since made their home. JoAnn graduated from Columbus Beauty School and worked at Oriental Beauty Salon. She then purchased her own business which was called JoAnns Beautyland which was located in the US 30 Center. She worked there until her retirement. JoAnn also had a ceramic shop in her home for many years in which she gave painting lessons and painted many beautiful items as gifts and to sell. JoAnn belonged to the Norfolk Ladies Extension Club, was a den leader for cub scouts, liked to polka dance, do crafts and enjoyed the outdoors.

JoAnn is survived by her husband Richard, sons Dale (Jean), Don (Mary) both of Columbus and Jerry (Kelly McCreery) of Lincoln; Grandchildren Jaime (Joe) Pallas of Overland Park, KS, Susan (Dana) Liebig of Hampton, VA, Jeff Peterson of Lincoln, Sara (Justin) Horner of Fremont, Matt Peterson of Lincoln, Paula and Mitchell Peterson of Columbus, Carli and Conor Peterson of Peoria AZ; Great granddaughter Brianne Peterson of Overland Park KS; Brother, Wayne (Bernice) Walters of Norfolk; sisters, Millie Stressenger of Pacerville, CA, Addy Reeves of Ava, MO, and Marian Beach of Mounds View, MN. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, son Roger, and sister Helen.

JoAnn was a member of First United Methodist Church in Columbus.
