Mass of Christian Burial is at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 13, 2020 at St. Isidore Catholic Church. Visitation is 3:00-5:00 P.M. Sunday with 5:00 P.M. vigil service at the Church. Interment is in All Saints Cemetery.
Joan was born on October 19, 1929 in Lindsay, Nebraska, to Joseph and Mary (Schmitt) Schaefer. She attended Holy Family High School and graduated in 1947. Shortly after graduation, her family moved to Columbus where she worked at Adam's Café in downtown Columbus and met Leland (Bud) Sackett. Joan and Bud were married October 2, 1950, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. They made their home in Columbus where they raised their nine children, except for a short time spent in Fremont. While raising her children, Joan worked as a waitress at several restaurants. After leaving her waitressing jobs, she became an entrepreneur with her delicious cinnamon roll business, delivering them fresh from the oven for many years. She loved to bake! As the family grew, Joan and Bud loved attending all of the various activities their children and grandchildren were involved in. Joan was a charter member of St. Isidore's Catholic Church in Columbus, Christian mothers, various prayer groups, and perpetual adoration for many years at St. Bonaventure Church. She also enjoyed quilting with the ladies from the church and volunteering with local nursing homes and the Simon House. Joan's sisters and friends also spent time doing crafts and ceramics together, where there was always laughter and kindness. Joan was named "Mother of the Year" for the State of Nebraska in 1998, a well-deserved honor. Joan's strong Christian faith was always apparent in the way she lived her life and the love she showed for everyone. She always put her family and other's needs ahead of her own.
Joan is survived by her husband, Bud, of 69 years; children Sue (Don) Gulzow of Grand Island, Karen Beck of Columbus, Pat (Cindy) Sackett of Columbus, Mary (Mark) Wangler of Columbus, Jim (Mary) Sackett of Omaha, Mike (Jan) Sackett of Elkhorn, Tom (Chris Martinez) Sackett of Elkhorn, Nancy (Mike) Thiem of Waterloo, and Cathy (Rey) Filipowicz of Elkhorn; twenty-nine grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren; sisters Joyce (Allen) Cooley of Elko, NV, Sherry Howell of Elko, NV; sister-in-law Shirley Sackett of LaVista, NE; numerous nieces and nephews. Also, a very special person in Joan's life: Bev Kudron.
Joan was proceeded in death by her parents, Joe and Mary Schaefer; daughter Maureen (1962); sisters Ethel Riley, Jeanette Maguire, Wilma Haferland, Arlene Preister, Mary Jane Fairbanks; brother Ken Schaefer; and son-in-law Gene Beck.
Joan's family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Norfolk Veterans Home for the wonderful care they provided.
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
