Obituary

James “Jim” Shanle, age 63, passed away at his home, due to a farming accident on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 in Columbus.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. Visitation is 4:00-7:00 p.m., followed by a 7:00 p.m. Vigil service at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. Interment is in St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery.

Jim was born May 24, 1963 in Columbus, NE to Francis and Marylee (Ebner) Shanle. He grew up in Columbus and graduated from Lakeview High School class of 1981. He went on to attend Northeast Community College in Norfolk, receiving a degree in Diesel Mechanics. Jim continued on to Southeast Community College in Milford and received his degree in electromechanical technology in 1987. Jim married his best friend Carrie Heesacker on November 17, 1990 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus. Together, they raised three amazing children; Jesse, Chantel, and Justin.

Jim went on to work at Loup Public Power District for 28 years while also farming on the side with his father Francis. In 2020 Jim retired, dedicating his time to his family and the farm. He was a devoted Catholic. He was truly a jack of all trades. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix or do- he was a workaholic. More importantly, Jim was an excellent provider, spending his free time with his family. Every year he made a point to go on a family vacation together. He gave the kids priceless life lessons and molded them into the individuals they are today. He was the kind of man who could light up the room with his personality, make anyone laugh with his sense of humor, and leave a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to have known Jim.
