James "Jim" L. Puetz, 77, of Columbus passed away September 1, 2018 at the Monarch Hospice in Lincoln, NE.
Jim was born September 27,1940 in David City to Lawrence and Lillian (Bruner) Puetz. He graduated St. Marys High School in David City and went on to graduate from Wayne State College. On July 5, 1969, Jim was united in marriage to Judy (Behrns) Puetz in David City, to that union were born three daughters; Becky, Kristie, and Jamie.
Jim first started his teaching and coaching career in Springview, NE from there he went to Nebraska City Lourdes and onto Central City. In 1967 Jim began his time at Scotus Central Catholic where he taught and coached until his retirement in 2007.
Coach Puetz inspired a generation of students and athletes throughout his years at Scotus. He will always be remembered for his infectious laugh and big heart in the classroom and on the field. His proud Luxembourg personality radiated through almost everyone he met. His numerous successes include championships in both track in 1978/79 and football in 1967, 84, 93. He was inducted into the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame in 2007, as well his Championship teams. His final award was in 2016 when he was given the Skip Palrang Memorial Award in recognition of outstanding and dedicated service to high school football and athletes.
Although probably best known as Coach, Jim's best attributes were his love of family, faith and his giant heart. He lived most of his life in Columbus where he was a member of St. Bonaventure Church and Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife Judy of 49 years, daughters Becky (Claude) Michel of Plattsmouth, Kristie (Bill) Kallemeyn of Lincoln, and Jamie (Justin) Parker of Omaha. Brother Gary (Judy) Puetz of Columbus, Sister Nancy (Ron) Zahourek of Le Mars, IA, sister-in-law: Patti Puetz of Omaha. Grandchildren include Makenna, Eli, Finley, Max, Presley and Kellen. He survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by parents Lawrence and Lillian Puetz and brother Bill Puetz.
