Jermain died Sunday, November 16, 2014 at his home in Columbus.
Jermain was born April 5, 1925, in Dodge, Nebraska to Joseph and Teresa (Knust) Rhode. He attended Sacred Heart School at Olean, Nebraska and graduated from Howells High School in 1944. Jermain entered the Army on February 23, 1945 and attended both his basic training and military police school at Camp Robinson in Arkansas. He served in the Army during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in Japan. Jermain was honorably discharged on November 22, 1946 and received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. On August 21, 1951, he married Alice Ritzdorf at St. Patrick Church in Dublin, Nebraska. They lived in Howells and he was employed at Baumert Furniture and Hardware for five years. In 1958 they moved to Columbus where he became manager and buyer for Diers Farm and Home Supply for 36 years. He retired in 1994. Jermain and Alice were blessed with four children.
Jermain was a founding member of St. Isidore Catholic Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post #155 in Howells for 68 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3704 of Columbus. Jermain was a member and officer of the Howells Last Mans Club World War II for 66 years. Jermain also proudly served over 20 years on the Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard and was a recipient of the Keith Bryant award.
Jermain adored his four grand-daughters and loved attending their volleyball games, dance recitals, school grand-parents days and many other activities. He enjoyed working in his yard, and fixing and painting things for his family and friends. Other hobbies included coin collecting, golfing and bowling. He remained a faithful sports enthusiast all his life, cheering on his many favorite teams. Jermain will be remembered for his kindness, discipline, wisdom and love for family, friends and the Lord.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; children, Sandra Rhode of Kannapolis, North Carolina, Jolene (Rhode) and Tim Wojcik of Grand Island, David and Joan Rhode of Omaha, and Steven Rhode of Flagstaff, Arizona; grand-daughters Jessica Wojcik, Taylor Wojcik, Ava Rhode and Emma Rhode; one sister, Alda Grosserhode of Dodge; and one sister-in-law Leola Rhode of Howells; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Reinold.
