(Ilva) Jean Powers died Friday, October 18, 2013 at Faith Regional Health Center in Norfolk.
(Ilva) Jean Powers was born January 8, 1925, at Venango, Nebraska, to David and Myrtle (Chaney) Newth. Jean was the seventh child, having four older brothers and two older sisters. She attended Venango Public School, graduating in 1941 followed by Kearney State College for two years. After teaching at Imperial and then Venango, Jean came to Silver Creek in the fall of 1945 to teach grade music and seventh and eighth grades.
On January 26, 1946, Jean married Ned Powers of Silver Creek in a service on her family farm in Venango. To this union were born five children: Kenneth (stillborn), Steven, Nancy, David, and Douglas.
Ned and Jean lived in Silver Creek for most of their married life, residing in their long-time home for sixty years. She taught in western Nebraska for two years and in the Silver Creek school system for twenty-seven years followed by several years of substitute teaching in the area schools. Ned died in 2006. Jean moved to Norfolk in the spring of 2012 residing at the Meadows until her death Friday.
Jean was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, United Methodist Women, and Senior Citizens. She was a life-long, avid reader, sharing that love with others until the end. While teaching in the Silver Creek school system, Jean touched many lives, even teaching three generations of some families.
Jean Powers is survived by four children: Steve and Shirley Powers of Norfolk; Nancy and Wayne Wruble of Chandler, Arizona; Dave Powers of Omaha; and Doug and Karen Powers of North Platte; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Burle Newth of Venango;
