Ione died Thursday, October 28, 2010 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Ione J. Riley was born September 10, 1919 in Garfield County Nebraska to Everett and Susie (Lytle) Key. She spent her early childhood in the Burwell area, then moving to South Dakota with her family, graduating from Winner South Dakota High School. As a young adult, Ione migrated to the San Francisco Bay area during WW II, working as a welder building Liberty and Victory transport ships. After WW II, she returned to the Nebraska Sandhills. In 1954, she moved her young family to Columbus, working in restaurants, cleaning homes, even ironing for other people among various jobs. Later on, she worked as the over-night dispatcher for the Columbus Police Department for 15 years. Prior to accepting the police dispatcher's position, she was head cook at Morys Haven for four years. Ione stated many times that she received great satisfaction helping the elderly at Mory's. Ione spent her final year of life as a resident of Morys. For being a giving volunteer, Ione received the AkSarBen Good Neighbor Award in 1985.
