Iona K. Slates

Iona K. Slates, age 84, of Columbus died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Columbus.

Iona Slates was born May 4, 1929 in Oakwood, MO. She grew up in the Oakwood and Hannibal, Mo area. She graduated from Quincy High School in Illinois. Iona married Robert G. Slates on June 16, 1947 in Palmyra, MO. They lived in Quincy for a period of time. In 1970 they moved to Columbus. Iona worked at Ace Hardware and SunMart Grocery. She was a member of Federated Church. She enjoyed crafts, quilting, cooking, and playing cards with family and friends.


She is survived by:
daughter: Diane Ball of Salem, OR
daughter: Sara (Larry) Cannon of Omaha
son: Joe (Lori) Slates of Omaha
brother: Ernest(Dorothy) Yackley of Durham, MO
5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren


She was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Robert in 2000, brother: Harry "Hap" Yackley
