Herbert died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Herbert Honke was born on March 11, 1924, in Butte, Nebraska and went to our Lord on April 25, 2012, in Columbus, Nebraska. He was born to Paul Peter and Emma (Ertz) Honke the 7th of 12 children and spent the early years of his life on the family farm near Butte.
Herbert enlisted in the army during WW2 and was stationed in Washington State and Hawaii, from 1942 to 1945. He attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and worked for Capital Supply Company as a salesman, retiring in 1997. He has been a resident of Columbus, NE, since1962 and was a member of St. Bonaventure Church since moving to Columbus.
Herbert and Mildred loved to travel and took several vacations around the United States including a trip to Alaska, New England and Europe. He was always the life of every trip entertaining fellow travelers with his jokes and stories. He enjoyed gardening and was especially proud to share his giant cherry tomatoes with everyone. Nothing made Herb happier than to be surrounded by his family. Holiday gatherings were special to him and he loved his family very much, especially seeing his grandchildren and his great-grand children.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred L. Honke, children, Michael P. and Martha Honke, all of Columbus, NE; Vicki A. and Duane Hodge, Ashland, NE; and Terry L. and Connie Honke, Lincoln, NE; grandchildren, Heather (John) Schroder, Beth (Derek) Babel, of Columbus, NE; Matthew (Kathy) Honke of Roca, NE; Betsy Shonka of Williamsburg, VA; Amber and Colby Honke of Lincoln, NE; Traci (Craig) Barnard of Lincoln, NE; and Marty (Jodi) Hodge of Omaha, NE. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Shelby, Allison and Lindsay Schroder, Jack and Parker Shonka, Tyson and Regan Barnard, and Landon and Levi Hodge.
His parents, grandson, Stephen Shonka, plus several brothers and sisters preceded Herbert in death.
Memorials may be given to St. Bonaventure Church, Scotus Central Catholic, Federated Church or the donors preference.
