Helen E. Weber

September 11, 1918 — January 18, 2014

Helen died Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Mory's Haven in Columbus.

Helen was born on September 11, 1918 on a farm near Oconee, Nebraska to the parents of Clarence and Claribel Gates. Helen was the oldest of six children, two brothers and three sisters. She attended elementary and High School in Columbus by staying with Grandparents. She graduated from Kramer High School. When asked about college she stated there was no money for college so January 20, 1937 I was married to Leonard Weber. Leonard was five years older than Helen and always said he was waiting for her to grow up, he was the only boyfriend and love she ever had. They were married at Helen's parents home. The day was one of the worst Nebraska blizzards. Helen's aunt was bringing the cake from Hastings; of course she couldnt make it so Leonards mother baked an angel food cake so they could have a wedding cake.

Helen and Leonard lived on a farm north of Monroe until 1951 when they moved to Columbus and Leonard joined his father George Weber at Weber Insurance Agency. Leonard and Helen had three children; Gary Weber of Columbus, George Weber (Cheryl) of Bellevue, and Jane Weber Schneider (Jeff) of Columbus. Helen enjoyed working and spent 23 years as the secretary at Columbus Junior High. She retired in 1980. Leonard and Helen had five years to travel and enjoy one another before he passed away with a heart attack in May 1985. At the time of her death Helen had eight grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Helen was always a forward thinker and involved in various organizations which included being a Den Mother, Girl Scout leader, President of Third Ward PTA, First United Methodist Circle Leader and Guardian of Jobs Daughters. Helen was a member of Eastern Star and PEO Chapter FJ and belonged to 36 Club, 2 Bridge Clubs and 2 Bridge Marathons.

Helen will be remembered by family and friends as a witty, sharp, outgoing woman. When life gave her struggles she never looked back but kept focused on moving forward. She never turned down an invitation and had exceptional sense of style, manners and grace. She was a loyal and trustworthy friend to many and she bore the example of hard work, kindness, and reverence to the Lord. She was known for her chocolate chip cookies, angel food cakes, and wealth of knowledge of cards. Helen will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Helen was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Helen's life is a reflection of Gods grace and love. She was a faithful servant. According to Helen I try to live my life like a window for the Lords light to shine through and a mirror to reflect his love to all I meet.
