Helen Harrington passed away on Monday, July 4. She was 88 years old.
Helen was a truly remarkable woman who overcame hardships and obstacles with tenacity and strength far greater than her small frame suggested possible. Born and raised in Hastings, Nebraska, Helen grew up with those solid small town values of honesty, faithfulness and hardwork, which served her well throughout her long life. After marrying, she lived in Lincoln until 1963 when she moved to Columbus. She raised two sons whom she loved very much. When they were grown she decided to go to college and pursue a career in journalism. First attending Platte Community College and then Kearney State, Helen demonstrated both courage and determination and earned the admiration of faculty and students alike. After earning her degree in journalism she secured jobs with newspapers in Hastings and then back in Columbus. In various journalistic roles, but especially as a feature writer at the Columbus Telegram, Helen manifested exceptional talent and productivity. She won the hearts of everyone she associated with whether people she interviewed, co-workers, or her many, many readers who enjoyed her articles over the years. She proved to us once again that a person's true stature isn't measured in inches but in those qualities of the heart, which she always displayed. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her son John and many grandchildren.
