Helen L. Cheloha of Columbus died Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Columbus.
Helen Leocadia Cheloha was born November 24, 1913 in Duncan, NE to Joseph and Mary (Drozd) Ziemba. She was raised on a farm near Duncan where she attended and graduated from St. Stanislaus School. On February 4, 1937 she was united in marriage to Frank Cheloha at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Omaha. Helen was a housewife, partnering with her husband on their farm. She raised three sons in addition to countless hours of farm work such as milking cows, raising chickens and doing whatever was needed with farm operations.
Helen was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthonys Altar Society, St. Theresa Sodality, Legion of Mary, adult choir, and the Franciscan Missionary Union. She loved cooking Polish foods for her family, was an accomplished card player, loved playing bingo at her church, and did crochet and embroidery work for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. At the age of 85, Helen traveled to the Holy Land with a parish group from St. Anthonys Church. On that trip, she proudly carried a cross on the Via Dolorosa as well as venturing a camel ride. Helen enjoyed traveling to visit relatives and to attend weddings all over the United States, including Nebraska, Phoenix, and even Maui.
Helen was deeply religious and very family oriented. She led rosaries in church and volunteered for years at weddings and funerals. She leaves many grandchildren and great grandchildren who will remember her love, guidance, and her acceptance of their messes in the kitchen. She loved to dance, with Polka being her favorite. Helen had a wonderful sense of humor and curiosity about the world, including Nebraska football.
Her warmth and love encompassed her family and friends and she touched everyone she met during her long and productive life.
