Harry "Doc" Lange, DVM died Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Harold N. "Doc" Lange was born April 7, 1928 in Crofton, Nebraska to William and Theresa (Lammers) Lange. He grew up on the family farm west of Crofton and graduated from Crofton High School in 1945. Harry played professional baseball in the New York Giants minor leagues for a short while. He served as a cook in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War from 1951-1953. Harry attended Kansas State University where he received his BSA and then his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1961. On August 6, 1956 he was united in marriage to Marianne Mathews in Columbus. Harry worked as a Veterinarian in Columbus for many years and was owner of A&M Veterinary Clinic. He was a member of the AVMA from 1961 to present where he served in the House of Delegates from 1977-1994 and then became part of the executive board as vice president from 1994-2000. He was also a member of the NVMA from 1961 to present , serving in various offices and eventually becoming president. He also served on the State Board of Examiners for many years. Harry was a member of the Elks Country Club and Elks Lodge and Sertoma Club. He was inducted into the Columbus High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009 and served on the school board from 1981-1994 and was a past president. Harry was active in 4H where he received the 4H award. From 1963-1993 he served as the Veterinarian at Ag Park. He also served at the Columbus Sales Pavilion for many years. In 2004 the Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Recognition Award was bestowed upon Doc Lange. The award is in recognition of time and effort devoted to advancing veterinary medicine and for being an exemplary role model for future alumni in a professional and community setting. Harry was a member of St. Isidore Church where he served as Lector and a member of the Holy Name Society. He served on the Columbus YMCA Board for 10 years. He enjoyed skiing, golfing and loved to watch his grandchildren's sports and activities.
