Gertrude L. Gash died January 17, 2012 in Clearwater, FL.
Gertrude L. (Held) Gash was born March 14, 1908 to Emil & Rachael (Schmid) Held in Bismark Township, Platte County, Nebraska. She was Baptized and Confirmed at St. John's Shell Creek Lutheran Church. Trudys mother died when she was 3 and she went to live with her Aunt, Mary Schmid, in Columbus. She graduated from Columbus High School. She then attended Ward-Belmont in Nashville, TN and Rockford College in Rockford, IL. She married Ellis T. Gash in 1928 and lived in Chicago. They later divorced and Trudy left Chicago with her dear friend Ruth on a ship for Argentina. Thence began her love affair with ships and traveling. She was employed by UPI and USIA and lived in many different parts of the world. She traveled around the world 16 times as a passenger on merchant and cargo ships. At the age of 92, she sailed her last voyage and settled in St. Petersburg, FL where she lived independently at The Princess Martha until a few months ago when she was moved to The Oaks of Clearwater nursing home to be cared for. She had an interesting life and loved people. She enjoyed playing cards and going on adventures with her friends in Florida.
Trudy was the granddaughter of John Held, one of the original 13 founders of Columbus, Nebraska. She is survived by her nephew Milton Lueke of Columbus, NE, many great nephews and great nieces, extended family and good friends. She was preceded in death by her brother Louis Held, sisters Lottie Cattau, Elsie Kunneman, Margaret Jones, and Lillie Lueke.
A memorial service was held on January 20, 2012 at the Princess Martha in St. Petersburg, FL.
