Obituary

It is with a profound sense of loss and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of George A. Reed, of Columbus, who left this world on March 25, 2026, at the age of 86. George transitioned gracefully from this life in the comforting surroundings of his home, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and cherished memories.

Born on June 2, 1939, George grew up in Newton, IL, with a spirited curiosity and an adventurous heart that would define his life. The son of Albert and Nadine (Tracy) Reed, he was a man of unwavering dedication who served his country with honor in the U.S. Air Force, a commitment that exemplified his sense of duty and patriotism. His time in the military instilled in him values of discipline, integrity, and courage, which he carried throughout his life.

In January of 1959, George was united in marriage to Marjorie Thompson in Newton, Illinois. Together they built a family that would become George’s greatest pride and joy. The couple traveled many places while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force before moving to Columbus in 1972. George worked at Joe & Al’s Grocery, Tempo, City of Columbus, and drove the Discoverer bus for Columbus Public Schools for 20 years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

George was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife, Marjorie Thompson, his brother Franklin “John” Reed, his son-in-law Bill Jansen, his daughter-in-law Cheryl Reed, and step-grandson Todd Jansen.

His legacy is beautifully continued by his sisters, Ester Murray and Barb Ross. He is also survived by his devoted children, Deb Jansen and Steve Reed, who were his constant companions and sources of immense pride. In them, George saw the continuation of his values and dreams, and he took great joy in their accomplishments and happiness. His love extended warmly to his five grandchildren: Cory Reed (Michelle), Megan Stiles (Andrew), Travis Runquist (Laura), Chance Reed (Stephanie), Jesse Reed and 1 anti biological grandchild: Mattie Imus.  Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he delighted in their growth and successes, offering guidance and laughter every step of the way. He also had 4 great grandchildren and many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

A celebration of George's life will be held on Monday, March 30th from 5-7 pm, at McKown Funeral Home, where family and friends will gather to honor the remarkable man he was. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 31st, at 10:30 am, at McKown Funeral Home. The interment is in the Roselawn Cemetery with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard.
